Welcome to 5k5k Start the Challenge today!

A little about me. I began this site in October 2008 as an effort to encourage and guide others down paths that I have traveled. I married my high school sweet heart right after high school and joined the Marines. My wife and I put ourselves through college, both of us earning degrees in education. The same month I finished college, my wife gave birth to our first child. She chose to stay home with our daughter so I took a management position with Wal-Mart. Over the first 8 years of our marriage we began to accumulate debt, and it caught up with us in 2004. I had just got off of active duty, after being recalled to active duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and my wife and I were expecting our second child in a matter of weeks. We bought a new home that was over 50% of our take home income. One unexpected change in income nearly sunk us as our income was reduced by nearly $300 per month. We had been walking the tight rope of finances and the line was cut with no safety net.

We began to pay our way out of debt. Over the next 1 1/2 years we eliminated over $20,000 in debt. Since 2004 we have completely changed where we are financially.

My wife has returned to teaching now that both of our children are in school and last year I left my corporate job and took a 50% cut in salary to spend more time pursuing my own interest and to spend more time with family. Even with these changes financially we are able to save over 30% of our income and we paid cash for a 700 sq ft addition to our home. I want to share the process of how we changed our life financially and what I have learned about life and money along the way. I encourage you to join 5k5k.org and challenge yourself to improve your finances and your level of physical fitness. Begin your own success story today.

How do I flag a profile / friend request as spam? I don't want to just block them from contacting me, I want to get them off the site.

Hi Chett - I can't figure out how to reply to you when you send messages. Got your message today about your book. I'd love to read it. I have started on saving my 5k$ and I'm on my way. Running is another story. I travel to Africa for work about every 6 weeks, and it throws off my plans. Currently, I can't run more than 45 seconds without stopping, and when I say running, of course I mean jogging. I can swim, but I've never been a runner. My 5K is April 18 - I was the first person to sign up for this 5K. I don't think I'll make it, unless I start trying to do a program every day between now and then. Can I actually start training now, and double it up, without injury??? I really need help - so I'm a willing guinea pig for you, if you want. If I can't run the whole 5k, i'll run as much as I can, and walk, and sign up for another one where I can actually run it all. Love to hear your advice, and see your program. I have always wanted to write a book about my experiences in Africa, but haven't. Maybe you will be inspiration for 5k/5k/book!

Thanks for the nice comment Chet. You have a great idea here to combine 2 attainable yet important/fulfilling goals and am excited to see it take hold.

No, I have not been able to run outside. But I have bought a Nordic Trac strider and have been on it almost everyday since I bought it two weeks ago. Hopefully it will keep me going in the right direction until it warms up. Thanks for checking and I am really enjoying the website. I just recently changed my home and car insurance and saved around $1400/yr by switching. Same coverage, different company. I know I can use the money just as well as them.

Hey Chett, received your message. Have been busy celebrating Christmas with family. Didn't realize we were such close neighbors. I have been using Quicken since I purchase my first IBM compatible in the mid eighties. I also use Quick Books in our business. I however highly recommend Quicken over all the other financial software. Budgets are a breeze once you do all the other work. Will get back with you next week. I have an 8 hour and three 12's to do the next four days.

I believe we all agree that we need to be able to measure our goals. Although some goals are not so easy to quantify such as relationships .Finances can be as simple as measuring weight-loss, fitness (as time to run a distance, weight lifted/ reps, etc), number of cigarettes smoked per day.

A discussion about financial software, income statements, cash flow, and balance sheets should be an important topic. What do you think?

Zen and the Art of Personal Finance Part 2

Last week I began this series called Zen and the Art of Personal Finance. Again the idea is to pull personal finance principle from the classic novel Zen and the Art of Motor Cycle Maintenance. I know this sounds a little hokey, but as I read this book for the first time the parallels between the struggles Robert… Continue
